A 38-year-old bodybuilding woman from Currituck County remained jailed Sunday after being charged with the slaying of her husband and amid reports the couple had been having marital problems.
Lateisha Jandreau is accused of first-degree murder of 51-year-old Paul
Jandreau, who had been missing since the middle of last week. His wife was found hiding in a closet of the couple’s Brumsey Landing house Friday evening and his body was later discovered in the garage.
Authorities named Lateisha Jandreau’s brother, Eugene Askew, a person of interest in the probe. He frequents Elizabeth City, Gates County and Suffolk, Va., reports said.
Paul Jandreau, a retired Navy master chief, worked at BAE Systems in Norfolk, Va. Concerns of his whereabouts started when he failed to show up for work Wednesday morning.
Paul and Lateisha Jandreau had been married approximately eight years after meeting in a kickboxing class. She won a state bodybuilding championship last month.
Paul Jandreau’s brother Mike told The Virginian-Pilot that his brother had been talking for weeks about a divorce, but that his brother was not worried about anything and that he just needed to get her out of the house so he could have his life back.
Mike Jandreau also told The Virginian-Pilot that he had advised his brother to retain a lawyer and had thought his brother had done so.
Currituck Sheriff Susan Johnson told television station WAVY-10 that she obtained a search warrant and went to the house Friday evening after Lateisha Jandreau repeatedly delayed requests to answer questions.
“It was bizarre because she was actually in a dark house, hiding in the closet,” Johnson said. “She should have known that we were going to be spending an amount of time at the residence.”
Johnson said she and investigators, while searching the garage, “recognized a really faint odor of what we knew to be the odor of death.”
Reports said that friends saw Lateisha Jandreau and her brother loading furniture into the bed of Paul Jandreau’s truck, with the truck backed up to the house.
Friends also reportedly said that the house’s windows were covered on the inside with wrapping paper and that one of the bathrooms reeked of bleach.
WAVY-10 reported that Lateisha Jandreau has been working at Xe, formerly known as Blackwater.
